You're unsure about the best approach for your setup. It seems you might want to check if installing the new components works without updating the BIOS first, or if you need to do it later with the 5800X3D already in place. Regarding your SSD cloning issue, you likely need to reinstall or reconfigure the new drives after upgrading. Consider consulting your motherboard manual for specific steps on adding additional storage.
To answer in order, maybe (depends on the manufacture date of the motherboard), no, yes. It's a highish chance that it's got a BIOS update for that CPU, but high enough that I'd bet on it being update, but you can do BIOS flashback with a CPU installed so you might as well try. If it doesn't POST, do the BIOS update, and if it does POST, enjoy the system. That more sounds like something was funky with the boot order on your old build, set it up in your system and rearrange the boot devices so that the NVMe drive is up first.
It seems you're wondering about compatibility with the CPU and whether flashing back would still function if the system doesn't support it. You also mentioned confusion over boot order changes and encountered issues with removing other drives before the NVMe one worked. It looks like you're trying to troubleshoot installation challenges in your M-ATX setup.
Thanks, but this seems like a beta BIOS with limited features and some stability issues. It runs slow and isn't very reliable at the moment. I considered that possibility but didn’t find a way to enable it (since the B350 BIOS is already problematic). I’ll give it a shot on the new board if needed, assuming it’s not a true beta—then hopefully it works well and has proper documentation. Thanks again!
It was quite odd just now... I got everything ready... started up, pressed del... boots went straight into windows... So far it's working but the Sata Evo 970 is missing...! I connected it as a connector but it didn't fit... "windows repair" appeared again, same issue as before, and it would change the boot order to a random SSD (the crucial MX500, no Windows files on that one either, just like with the old build). But this time I managed to fix it. Hopefully setting BBS to NVMe worked, so it booted into Windows... I tried that too on the old build but it didn't help then... strange! Anyway, "game boost" was enabled, shouldn't they have asked first? I don’t even have the right chipset drivers yet, and I haven’t updated the BIOS either—I think I should check that. It looks like the current one is pretty outdated (need to verify). Oh, and I’m missing a network driver... seems smart. Not sure how to fix that. I already downloaded the chipset driver and BIOS before changing the hardware, so maybe I’ll try that again. Edit: it enabled precision boost overdrive instead of game boost—I still don’t want that without my chipset drivers... corsair link is also broken, so I think I need to reinstall that.
The only thing that's really weird is that it wouldn't want to boot into windows with that specific drive installed (a 970) I think it's because there's actually a "msdwload" (or similarly named) folder on it... who knows what windows saved on that drive... Setting up the "BBS" boot order fixed it though, seems to work normally now (idk whatever BBS is tbh... its the first thing MSI suggests to do however...) So yeah, its all a little weird haha. BIOS update worked too (i don't think the initial one actually supported the X3D outside of it running at base speed...) Huge pita to update, as usual... wouldn't recognize any of my USB drives until I reformated a 64GB drive to FAT32 (which according to internet shouldn't even be possible ) Its all working now outside a few programs like corsair link seemingly having problems to recognize the motherboard fully... a shame because I always use it to check fanspeeds and what not, its a really lightweight little program (discontinued btw afaik) Do you think i should reinstall it so it'd recognize the board fully? ps: as a side note while the beta bios on my old b350 was slow as heck and at times unreliable, i miss the simplicity lol, these BIOS are so flashy its hard to find what I'm looking for... its all working now though, setting up the fans was quite easy at least... XMP works... next up Im gonna try the PBO thing I guess.
