Hi.
Looking for a new laptop!
1. What is your budget?
Around 1000 euros, but if you guys think there could be good Black Friday offers, I could also take recommendations for maybe 1300 euros RRP devices.
2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering?
13-15", easily portable. I won't be using it at home where I have a desktop.
3. What screen resolution do you want?
1080p is a good start. Doesn't have to end there, but it's a laptop for working, not for gaming or movies.
4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop?
It's not going to replace a desktop. I don't need to add keyboards or monitors to it. It has to be portable.
5. How much battery life do you need?
Around 15 hours, but you can never have too much battery life. Two years later it's not going to last that 15 hours anymore.
6. Do you want to play games with your laptop?
Short answer, no.
7. What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? Excel, video meetings, Word, Web browsing. Nothing too demanding, but I want a reliable device that has a long lifespan.
8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need?
I don't honestly know how much the OS alone takes, but I'm not a heavy user of storage space. It's mostly documents and pictures that I will be storing, so not much.
9. If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post their links.
This is a bit tricky, since I don't know how many of these Websites are ieven in English. But many Webstores in Finland offer laptops, like Dna.fi, Elisa.fi, Verkkokauppa.com, Jimms.fi, Proshop.fi, Gigantti.fi...
10. How long do you want to keep your laptop?
A long time. Five years is a good start, but longer than that.
11. Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons.
I don't prerfer any brands, but I tell you this: I would like to consider Apple because I would like to learn to use MacOS. Windows 11 would be more practical, but it does not hurt to learn new things.
12. What country do you live in?
Finland
13. Please tell us
any additional information if needed.
I need a reliable and secure, sturdy laptop that I can use to work on the road. Online meetings are so common these days that a reliable good camera is very much appreciated.
So Apple MacBook Air M4 13" used to be around 950 euros for a good while. Is not anymore, but maybe the same offer returns on Black Friday. I'm considering the 15" model aswell, because 13" honestly scares me. It used to be enough for Amiga A500 but that was a long time ago.
I just don't honestly get it why MacBook Air M4 is considered one of the best - if not the best - laptops in 2025. I get it that the CPU, GPU and memory work better together, but similarily priced Windows laptops often have twice the memory of MacBook Air.

The M4 MacBook Air is likely the top choice available today. However, the 256GB storage option falls short for your needs at this price point. They are currently offering an education program, which could provide a discount and possibly free AirPods if you qualify.

To dive into the Apple world, you'll need to connect with an Apple gadget, such as a MacBook. It seems you're leaning toward embracing the Apple experience;
https://www.verkkokauppa.com/fi/catalog/...le_laptops
I’ve used MacBooks before, and their screens are unmatched. The M-series chips also perform better in terms of heat management. For tasks requiring professionalism and style, nothing compares to the elegance of an Apple device. Laptops from Intel and AMD often overheat, which can be tricky to handle. If you prefer a ready-to-use setup without needing to adjust the laptop’s internals, Windows-based machines aren’t your ideal choice.
Here’s a brief overview I found on one of the sites you mentioned:
https://www.verkkokauppa.com/fi/cat..._d..._size:14.5&filter=pim_display_size:15
Additionally, I generally dislike laptops because their upgrade options are quite limited. The CPU, GPU, and often memory are soldered onto the board, leaving only storage upgrades—usually just one M.2 slot to keep things compact.
Regarding battery life, back then quality components were more common. Nowadays, technology is more disposable, and holding onto a laptop for long periods isn’t cost-effective. Still, over the past two years, your battery will lose capacity due to wear and tear.

I thought that it would be fun and possibly useful to learn how to use MacOS. And Apple has a pretty good reputation. Their products may be overpriced but they are rarely bad. That's what people say, I do not know.
I am a desktop person myself. Full-size keyboard, mouse, >20" monitor. It's a winner compared to a laptop. Cramped keyboard and small screen doesn't exactly encourage to spend hours using Excel or writing reports, but I need something portable.
Anyway, Macbook Air M4 13" and 15" are no longer on discount. There's a pretty neat free gift that one can get (if one happens to be a student, teacher or a parent of a student) with a MacBook Air, but frankly these iPods and Magic Keyboards etc are not useful to me so I'd rather just have a clear discount instead. But maybe I'll have to wait for the Black Friday then.

The M4 MacBook Air seems to offer great value today. However, the 256GB storage isn't sufficient for your needs at this price point. They are currently running an education program, which could provide a discount and possibly free AirPods if you qualify.

Their products might be expensive but they usually work well. However, fixing them can be extremely difficult after liquid damage. Many people are pushing for the right to repair Apple gadgets, but most components are custom-made for specific models like the MacBook. For example, when they run, everything works perfectly. When something breaks, it fails badly. Replacing a screen can be very costly, which is why I assist with tech issues at a local gated community football team.

By the way, I’m also an Apple user and have a mixed feeling about Apple products.

I'm not alone. My wife has an iPad Pro that I purchased about ten years ago. It works really well, but it cost me a lot of money.

You can purchase all parts of a Mac at the self-service repair center. Fixes are affordable too—£500 for a mini LED screen isn't too much

I believe 256GB might not suffice. It could work for me, but I still prefer having a backup external storage option, just in case. Even on a Windows desktop. Unfortunately, the current offers here are not very favorable. Even if I were able to secure an educational deal, it would only include a free €200 accessory, such as a Magic Keyboard or Mouse. Honestly, I don’t see any real need for them. I think I might wait until the prices return to what we had last month.

I understand that repairing Apple devices can be costly. On the other hand, I’m uncertain about how affordable it is to fix ordinary laptops either. If a keyboard or display is damaged, they probably aren’t worth the repair effort. The only repair option that seems feasible is swapping the SSD if possible. However, I’m quite skeptical about warranties and their reliability. They might be available in the USA through local providers, but here in Finland it’s uncertain.

I think I’ll choose an Apple. It could be a mistake, but we’ll see. I’m still confused about why the MBA M4 is considered so good when you can easily find a durable laptop with a decent CPU, double the RAM, and four times more storage for the same price. But it’s okay! I just want to try out the 15" and 13" models before deciding.

Thanks to everyone for the help!

You can retrieve the AirPods and switch them on or off as needed. Also, look into their refurbished options.
