Because my inquiries mostly center on MLB, I thought it made more sense to share this here rather than in new projects. I’ve already acquired everything and am no longer in the planning stage. Hello, everyone—I hope you’re all doing well. I’m seeking some guidance. I chose to assemble a new PC, as my last build was from 2012 and technology has progressed significantly. Initially, I relied on a compatibility website to piece everything together before purchasing the components. I’m sharing the parts list just to confirm compatibility, and any advice would be much appreciated.
Computers have evolved a lot since I last put one together, so I’m not familiar with all the latest terms or devices. Honestly, I wasn’t a dedicated builder; I just put together stock parts without heavy cooling or overclocking. Now I’ll go through the components I bought and outline what I’d like to achieve next. For now, just in case anyone is interested, here’s the system I’m using as a backup for animation and rigging.
Current Setup: MLB = M5A99FX PRO R2.0
Proc = AMD FX-8350 Black Edition 8c 4.0GHz
Mem = G.Skill RipJaws X series 32GB 4x8GB DDR3 1600
GPU = RTX 2060 (replaced GTX 970 from ARK: Survival Evolved)
Storage = 4x SSD, 2x HDD
Backup = Stor (4x SSD, 2x HDD)
What I want to do next: I’ll check the parts one by one and then list my future plans. Before that, just to be clear, this is the system I’m using now and will keep for reference in animation and rigging work.
Some quick notes:
- I installed all four M.2 NVMe drives.
- I’m considering running them wirelessly at the same time, or using both wireless and SATA drives.
- I’m thinking about switching to a 4TB PCIe Gen4 X4 NVMe drive and possibly using one SATA drive.
- My current goal is to customize the PC for game development, modeling, rendering, animation, and photo editing.
- I use Photoshop for photo work, especially photogrammetry, and Blender for modeling, rendering, rigging, and animation.
- I also enjoy gaming and plan to dive deeper into 3D printing in the future.

You can operate four drives simultaneously. Only one will connect directly to the CPU, while the others share bandwidth via the chipset. It seems unlikely you'll require full bandwidth at once for your needs. Bifurcation is typically used on server or professional platforms such as Threadripper or EPIC. Your 16x slot is currently allocated for the 4090, but a board with two 16x slots that splits into 8x8x and then 4x4x might exist, allowing two drives. I wouldn't expect this to work. For long-term storage, you might consider a few SATA drives or slower SSDs. Four 990 Pro drives should suffice for running your projects.
