Networking advice
Hi guys, I have a Unifi Dream Machine setup with a Beacon HD I purchased back in 2020 and we are paying for gigabit speeds with Xfinity but I'm not getting what we are paying for, I'm only getting 100 or so Mbps speeds. What would y'all advise and recommend? I thought about just getting a Unifi Express and adding that in to see if it would help with speed and wireless coverage or doing wired access points. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I have a few questions for you.
1) Are you using a Wi-Fi or a wired connection?
2a) If it's Wi-Fi, what frequency band are you on and how close are you to the access point? Was your signal direct or did obstacles block it?
2b) If it's wired, have you verified your network settings to ensure 1 Gb speed?
I'm checking my wireless setup with a Wi-Fi 6E PCIe card. My desktop is in a dining room while I'm away from the AP. The beacon HD is in the laundry room and I'm using the 5GHz band.
If there are barriers such as walls or doors, you won't achieve maximum speed on the 5 GHz frequency. The 2.4 GHz range doesn't reach those high speeds either. The Beacon HD only supports Wi-Fi 5, which means delays could become a problem. The safest approach is to link your device via a cable to check actual internet performance. It's generally understood that users shouldn't assume full bandwidth through Wi-Fi.
