Network tips for inserting an AP into your FWG and swapping in newer equipment
Considerations on switching to this UAP-AC-LITE-US and USW-Flex-Mini setup. It involves connecting via a PoE port to an Ubiquiti US-8-60W switch, which in turn links to a 60W AP mode router. This should cover my 1250 sqft home for two 10-inch Wi-Fi tablets, a moto phone, and a Roku Express 4K. The plan aims to replace older gear like the TL-SG108E and TP-Link AC4000, which are currently in AP mode. My current configuration supports wired connections for two Linux machines, an NVIDIA Shield, two 10TB NAS drives (one per PC), a VoIP box for the landline phone, and a printer. The TP-Link AC4000 is placed centrally in the hallway, also in AP mode with the 2.4GHz radio off and the 5GHz radios active. Signal strength remains consistent across both devices, though switching to medium power settings helps maintain coverage without noticeable drop. For wireless, the setup works well with tablets on one 5GHz and the other on a 2.4GHz radio. The main challenge is performance when using both tablets simultaneously, as signal strength fluctuates and devices may freeze or lose connection after about an hour to three hours. Overall, this configuration seems reasonable within my $320 budget for new equipment, including shipping and taxes.
