I’m heading toward improving my home internet connection. There’s no fiber available at my site. I now use spectrum internet which includes a modem and separate router. The speeds are solid, coverage is decent but it throttles me when streaming Plex. The router blocks VPN connections to avoid throttling (hopefully that’s correct). Since the area isn’t far from coverage limits, it works fine. My Apple TV stays slow on Plex. My concern is finding a good router that supports VPN connections and offers reliable security for my home. I also plan to add security cameras later.

Are you referring to a nearby Plex server or a distant one? Local setups aren't connected to your internet unless you're using their free offerings. Most users, however, rely on their own media collections.

Currently, most services run smoothly and quickly—Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, etc.—but Plex is still an option.

You're aware that many ISPs in the US struggle with upload speeds? The upload rate determines how quickly your remote Plex server delivers data to the internet. Those who share their servers typically offer very limited upload capacity. My Comcast connection provides only 10 Mbps, which is insufficient for streaming a single 1080p remote at full quality. That's why I avoid sharing my Plex server online. The free movies and TV shows included with commercials function similarly to services like Amazon or Netflix. Anything else hosted on the server will only perform as fast as your internet connection allows. Spectrum isn't the issue unless the server is connected via their network; in that case, they're not throttling but simply offering poor upload speeds—no action needed.
