I can switch the gateway through the router using DHCP. It’s not very elegant since DHCP handles leases and all that, but it works when the 4G is unavailable. For DSL, I get limited data—about £2 extra compared to just a phone line. Thanks for your feedback; it’s helpful, though it doesn’t fit my needs.

You don’t need a vintage computer to function as a router—any older PC will suffice. Just ensure you have three network connections.

I don’t need a device with three network connections unless you relied on USB adapters. My setup works fine for me. I prefer avoiding extra energy use and the hassle of installation and upkeep. There are other users in the house, so reliability matters. It seems like something worth considering, but I’m not ready to invest right now.

I operate with a Pi-Hole to ensure privacy, otherwise I’d opt for 1.1.1.1.

If some family members aren't tech-savvy and can't adjust settings on the spot, it makes sense to automate the process for easier support when issues arise. pfSense runs on FreeBSD, which is reliable and doesn’t require ongoing maintenance—its features like Pi-Hole are pre-set and easy to manage. For power concerns, you can use small devices that draw just 10-20 watts.

Yes. But this is a very rare event - the likely-hood of the 4G connection failing is very low. I haven't had it happen in quite a while - and rebooting the modem and router fixed it. If I end up being able to use router B in bridge mode or with a modem - I'll just set my ASUS router to fall back to the DSL ? . Thanks
