Network service host configuration pinpoints disk at full capacity
While trying to reinstall Sea Of Thieves through the Xbox app on PC, both System and Service Host Network Service are locking my C: drive at 100% and halting the whole system. I’ve instructed the app to place the game on my F: drive, but it still gets stuck around 11GB downloaded and pins the other disk. The situation is so severe that I can’t speak or hear in Discord while it’s pinned, and even basic navigation becomes difficult. Unless I opt for a complete Windows reinstall or replace a failing drive, what other options exist? For context, this issue didn’t occur recently when installing Payday 3 via the same app, nor with Steam. My system specs are listed above.
I removed some files from both disks to make room. The issue persists, though I’m seeing occasional freezes. My C: drive shows 94.2GB available, then drops to around 87GB before snapping back to 94.2GB. It seems the Xbox app might be pulling large amounts of data and moving it to the F: drive. This could overload the system and trigger a lockup.
I resolved my own issue by purchasing Sea Of Thieves on Steam and halting the Xbox app install. Now Steam is downloading smoothly and writing directly to the drive. I can see usage stats in Task Manager for that storage device. It seems the Xbox PC’s settings might be poorly designed for this situation. This problem didn’t occur with Starfield, Payday, or Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The Xbox app also mentioned the game doesn’t install in its own folder, which likely explains the issue. At least the Steam version is currently discounted.
