It seems the setup is fairly straightforward. Each of the five units includes a 48-port switch with 1Gb ports for users and 10Gb ports for central connections. All ten Gb connections merge into a single switch that only requires 10Gb ports. This switch links to a Synology NAS providing all the features mentioned, except internet access. For maximum reliability, add another Synology with failover support. That’s essentially everything you need for this small configuration.

The specific router your ISP supplies matters, along with intended usage and required features. Using a home router isn’t ideal for tasks like VLAN segmentation; otherwise, it might not meet needs. For flat networks with minimal separation, it could work. Enterprise setups often lease ISP routers without control, so an ISP router at the edge plus your own L3 switch inside may be needed. Redundancy and required functions influence the choice. A small Synology NAS can handle basic tasks for a small team. Moving up, consider a Windows server with Active Directory for management. Adding redundancy with two servers helps balance load. Recommended services include AD DNS, DHCP, file sharing, mail, SCCM, anti-virus, and monitoring tools like Nagios or Nagios XI.
