Hello everyone... I own a gaming PC and enjoy playing online games with friends. I found Netgear offers several gaming routers like the XR 500 Pro Gaming and XR 450. Can you explain the differences between these two brands? And which one would be best for me? Thanks!

The models are XR500 and XR450. The main distinction lies in AC support: XR500 includes AC2600, whereas XR450 supports AC2400.

Are you looking for a gaming router? It might be better to get the same specifications as a regular router, possibly at a lower cost. Online gaming relies mainly on your internet speed, so your router's quality won't make much difference if your connection is slow.

The gaming router offers various functions such as stabilizing ping, minimizing lag, and locating the nearest server.

Latency mainly depends on your internet service provider. Gaming routers won’t greatly improve this issue. These are often used as sales tactics to take advantage of people not familiar with network settings.

Your router doesn't manage packet destinations. After packets leave your modem, it's up to your ISP to direct them. Even then, they likely reach a peering point before connecting to a backbone provider's network. You should know that the internet is essentially a network of networks. Each company controls how packets are sent within its own system. As others have noted, "Gaming routers" are just marketing hype.

Consider buying a reliable router with sufficient RAM instead of chasing gaming models. A decent option is often more affordable and performs better. It's hard to pick the right one without knowing your needs, but I’ve found that my non-gaming Fritzbox router works well now—after switching ISPs and receiving updates from the maker. Generally, security-wise, many of these are problematic. Some good choices include Netgear, Asus, OK’ish to good ZYXEL AVM, DrayTek models.
