The installation would have come from the company, and based on what I understand, it was originally built to use netBEUI. TCP/IP might not have been enabled for about two decades, and it seems no one made an effort to enhance it. The individual who might have known this was around three years ago for my role. I wouldn't question a significant boost in network performance since that netBEUI link would have easily traversed the gateway switch.

Now that it's late, I figured I could reach out to a race car data logger via Netbeui. The host ran Windows 10, and I used the 86Box Emulator with its manager. I connected through a dedicated network port—separate from the host’s TCP/IP stack. (I also tried an RS232 port.) For port passthrough, I set up the NIC to bypass the host entirely. My main challenge was needing software only for Windows 98. I created a W98 VM inside 86Box and learned how to share folders between host and VM for data access. On the W10 PC, I used npcap to capture packets. I configured the dedicated NIC in W10 to disable TCP/IP. In the 86Box manager, I selected an adapter with the RealTek RTL8019AS virtual NIC, set it as a PCAP port. This setup let the VM communicate over the NIC through Netbeui, so the W10 host required minimal effort. I tested several emulators and hypervisors, but only 86Box worked reliably.
