Need to grasp potential issues with upgrading to Windows 11 and TPM 2.0
I received notification from the Microsoft update program that my PC must install TPM 2.0 and a Gen 8 or newer CPU to upgrade to Windows 11.
My main concern is whether enabling and installing TPM 2.0 will remove any data from the existing system.
This might seem unnecessary, but it appears to be a security measure, and I have large amounts of data (hundreds of GB) that I need to keep safe.
I currently use a Gen 7 CPU (Intel i7-7700) on an MSI H270 Pro Carbon MB.
Will the upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11 allow me to modify the CPU and TPM without risking the license, since the system believes I’m transferring the software to another device?
I remember that the Microsoft software limits hardware changes before it suspects software theft by moving it to a different machine.
Upgrade the CPU first.
7th Gen Intel isn't natively compatible with Win 11.
Your current Win 10 license might still work for a new Win 11 setup on a different motherboard.
I mean a "new motherboard" since your existing one isn't suited for an 8th-gen CPU.
And if you're planning to switch both components, it might be better to aim for something around 2025...
😉
This page provides support information for the H270 gaming carbon motherboard.
I have several backups, but they won’t make the MB work with Gen 8. TurboTax and Microsoft are forcing me into a difficult situation.
TurboTax won’t support Windows 10 once Microsoft stops, and the MB can’t meet the new requirements.
Thank you for your help. That’s why I’m here.
