Hello, I upgraded my internet to Fibercast FTTH but I've been having issues with the wifi reaching the back of my flat. This is an old building and the wifi was never great but I managed to fit it using my own router Asus Rog Rapture GT-AC2900. I was previously with Virgin Media who used the Super hub 3 and it was pretty easy to setup, change it to modem mode and boom lt worked. But with this new moden I don't see a modem mode or understand how to go about using my own router. I was reading that you need to watch for double NAT issues so thought I'd ask for advice. There are a couple of websites about setting this up for bridge mode (but not in English). I would start by talking to my internet company and asking if they can turn it into bridge mode. You could also run as dual NAT mode and see if you have any issues. Many people don't do that. If you decide to go with that, you should turn off the WiFi on your i4850 so it doesn't mess up the Asus.

Maybe someone who knows how tech works can explain it better Hi David If you have your own router with a special setting called VLAN tag 911 on the internet connection side, then you can take out the old Icotera router completely. We use automatic IP addresses (DHCP) on our network and you'll need to wait about 10 minutes after unplugging the old one before the new one will start working.
So what is your problem with double NAT? Is this something you just saw or are you actually being limited by it? Mostly, this relates to people who need to do things like port forwarding to run a server or maybe want remote access to their home network via VPN. The ISP router supports DMZ which will send all traffic to your asus router which fixes the vast majority of issues people have with a dual nat configuration. There are vendors like att, this is the only way you can run them will not allow their router to be removed. I was somewhat surprised that the ISP even offered to allow you to swap out their router. What I had incorrectly assumed was it had a fiber optic port for its wan interface. It appears you have another device/ONT in your house that has the fiber port. SO if you really want to do this there is a setting on many asus router called 802.1Q under the wan settings. Since asus runs a single code image I think it is on all their router but I may not be correct. You can load merlin firmware on an ac2900 and it has the 802.1q option. With 802.1q you can set a vlan tag. I would recommend you try other option before you try to remove the ISP router. It again depends on why you want to do this in the first place.
Hi Bill, The main reason for using my own router is because the wifi signal gets weak at the back of my house. Even though this place is old, both my smart TVs keep cutting out or losing their signal. We also do a lot of gaming here and at some point someone told me to be careful about having double NAT; it can cause packet loss or other connection problems. This might not actually be true, but I tried setting up the DMZ as suggested and the router connected, yet the internet didn't work. I then plugged an ethernet cable from the box on the wall into the iCotera i4850 WAN port. I ran a small ethernet cable from LAN port 1 to the Asus WAN port. Then, I connected the ethernet from Port 1 of the Asus router to my PC and enabled the DMZ destination IP to 192.168.1.1. As suggested online, this wouldn't work. Later, when I changed the DMZ destination IP to 192.168.7.1, it did accept the connection but on the Asus router it said connected while the internet remained off. Also, do I need to disable wifi on the iCotera i4850 if I'm using DMZ mode? Or will that switch off in DMZ Mode anyway?
Gamers can be pretty dumb sometimes, believing all the crazy conspiracy theories and being too lazy to check facts on good websites before asking questions here. Actually, having two network types doesn't cause packet loss; single or dual connection works just as well. The only real issue could be if the router itself has bad software, but any device can fail for other reasons too. On paper, your ISP router and an Asus are basically the same quality because they both use the exact same WiFi chips from the manufacturer. Both companies likely make their own hardware, though they often re-use parts. Almost all routers transmit at the legal limit, which limits how far you can go. So in broad terms, saying one type of router is worse than the other is mostly a myth. It's hard to tell why some work better than others without knowing your house layout or where the antennas are placed. Comparing things like this usually gives mixed results. Tests done by companies under FCC rules show almost no real difference between routers. Most other tests get messed up because of how they were set up, so you can't fairly compare them from different people's homes or office test rooms. Instead of trying to fix everything with complex setups, I'd just turn off the wireless radios in your ISP router and use the Asus as a Wi-Fi extension point (AP). This lets the ISP router handle all functions except its own WiFi chip. If having one network type really matters, you don't need to put anything special on the destination IP or change settings like port forwarding since you probably aren't running a game server. You also probably don't need advanced features like VPNs or parental controls from the Asus if they're not needed. Just turn off your ISP router's WiFi and use the Asus as an AP, and that will be much easier to set up than trying to do everything with complex configurations.
