Just got a new motherboard and processor. Everything is fine, I just need to know what to do now. I've read that you should do a clean install of windows for the motherboard but I'm not sure why and the links most people provide are way too complicated. I still have "windows" on my old HDD (which I'm still using because it isn't old). Why can't I just boot to that?
If I do HAVE to do a fresh install using a usb, how does that work if I still want to use all the files on my HDD?
Can I get a short version of how to do a clean install of windows from the BIOS?

Other questions I haven’t found solutions to anywhere. If I set up the installation on a USB drive, does that make any difference? What happens to my HDD and SSD when they’re connected to the motherboard? Would they be erased if I plug them in? If I install from the USB and then load my HDD, assuming the BIOS recognizes it, would it boot normally as long as both operating systems are identical? I’ve already replaced all the hardware, but I still want a smooth transition. It’s becoming quite frustrating. Please let me know what to do—I’m just trying to understand and I don’t have the answers.

This situation is similar to what would occur if your current physical C drive failed at this moment. It can happen. Before beginning, ensure you have a verified backup of your personal files and offline copies of all usernames, passwords, and software serial numbers. Also, prepare a brand new Windows 10 or 11 USB drive for reinstallation. In short, you'll need to perform a complete operating system installation, plus all the other steps. Get ready.

Thanks, after some extra work and experimenting, everything is working smoothly. A few surprises I wasn't aware of were connected to the motherboard, but it's a valuable lesson and I'm relieved it's functioning. 👍
