Need some tips on X58 build
Hey there! After years with an HP Z600 workstation (two X5570 chips, 48GB ECC RAM, Strix 390X) and keeping it watercooled for nearly a year, I decided to dive into overclocking. Watching many TechYesCity videos about the X58 pushed me forward, so I finally found a great P6T Deluxe V2 board at a good price. Everyone was selling these in Z390 ranges, which made sense given the specs.
My plan was simple: reuse my existing RAM (confirmed it works on P6T boards) and pick a CPU from my stock—specifically the 2 5650 and 2 5687 chips—to save on the motherboard cost. But my attempts with the RAM didn’t go well, so now I’m looking to upgrade to DDR3 RAM. A 3x4GB package is way too low for 2020, especially with a triple-channel setup. Going all-in with 6x4GB sticks up to 24GB sounds like it’s worth it, but the cost is steep.
I’m considering whether the performance boost from faster RAM (1600MHz vs 1333MHz) and overclocking on Corsair Vengeance sticks is worth it. I already have five 4GB sticks at 1333MHz, and my goal is to hit a stable 4.5GHz or higher. With prices for DDR3 RAM so high in Greece, I’m worried about overspending. I’ve got an old AC unit with a big radiator, so temps should be fine, and I have plenty of spare parts if needed.
I’m thinking about switching to a new build—maybe a B450/3300x/16GB DDR4 set for around 270€ if I can find one in stock. That would give me a much better return on investment. Thanks for your help—I really appreciate it!
