I have a Windows 7 system with an HDD running. I recently purchased an SDD and installed Windows 8.1. I’m not concerned about data storage, just keeping things simple. Would it be sensible to purchase a small 4GB USB drive and download the ISO for Windows 7 since I probably won’t need it anymore? I already own it as a backup. Here’s how you could proceed:

1. Transfer Windows 7 onto the USB drive.
2. Set up a new optical drive—any model that supports burning DVDs would work, though a Blu-ray player is ideal if you want Blue Ray playback.
3. Disconnect the HDD, then connect the SSD and run the Windows 8.1 installation disc or the installation media from the SDD.
4. Once installed, keep Windows 7 running in the case only when necessary.

This approach gives you a portable version of Windows 7 while keeping your main system secure.

As for your questions:
- Your plan seems logical if you want a lightweight OS for occasional use.
- Upgrading to an SSD is a smart move for performance.
- Downloading 8.1 on the HDD and moving it to the SDD could work, but ensure the drive supports the required updates.
- Consider your future needs—if you anticipate heavy usage, stick with Windows 7 until then.

Let me know if you need help choosing a USB drive or setting up the installation.

Are you planning to use the SSD as a storage device or as your primary boot drive? If you're only going to use it for storage and installing software, simply connect it, and during startup you should see a boot menu offering options like Windows 7 or Windows 8. Choose Windows 7, then on your desktop manually format the SSD yourself.

I was planning to use the SDD drive together and avoid touching my HDD again. It would simply be there. I just received a 500GB Samsung Evo but am unsure what to do next. I considered installing Windows 8 or 1, using a USB drive with an ISO download for Windows 7, or moving everything into a new Enthoo Luxe case and reformatting Windows 7 later. I need the Windows 10 upgrade for dx12 and someone suggested getting Windows 8 as soon as possible. Alternatively, I could keep Windows 7 on both drives once I get the USB ISO file. Does downloading it from a site work with a valid key code? Which option is best?
