I owned an older machine about a year ago, and I upgraded several components. The processor was a Ryzen 5 5600X with BeQuiet Pure Rock 2 Cooler. The RAM was 16GB at 2666MHz, a single-channel stick from the previous setup. The motherboard had an Asus Tuf B550 Plus with Wi-Fi, a Gigabyte RTX3060 GPU, and a Cooler Master 650W cooler. My system also included a CPU cooler rated at 650W from the old machine.

I was expecting at least 3200MHz for my AMD CPU, but it only reached around 4.2GHz max. I was surprised it started up at all, since online sources suggested a minimum of 3200MHz. I wondered if the RAM was faulty, as I’m not very familiar with AMD CPUs and had only used Intel before. I tried enabling XMP in the BIOS and added ASUS Optimal, which claimed it would improve performance.

I believe the RAM is the main issue, though I’m not sure if upgrading it would make a big difference. My plan is to replace the RAM with something faster, like the Kingston Beast 16GB 2x8 3600MHz DDR4 CL17.

Aim for 3600MHz cl16 if possible, it really matters.

The processor should function well with your existing RAM. For optimal performance, aim for 3200 or 3600 MHz. The CPU clock speed will vary based on your tasks. In multi-core scenarios, the boost for all cores will be reduced. A 4.2 MHz is reasonable. You may notice individual cores hitting their full speed in Windows. Update your BIOS before adding more memory for improved compatibility.

Ryzen performs best with RAM clocked between 3200-3800MHz and a 1:1 FCLK ratio. Running at lower speeds works just fine, though you can increase RAM speed if clocks are desynced from FCLK—just be aware this usually reduces performance. RAM speed doesn’t impact CPU boosting, but overheating can cause clock drops with stock boosts. Monitor temperatures, voltage regulators, and DC voltages to ensure they stay within safe limits; exceeding 80°C can lower clock speeds. Keep an eye on PCT, EDC, and TDC to confirm they aren’t hitting their limits. According to common sources, the maximum single core boost is around 4.6GHz, while all-core boost tops at about 4.2GHz (if accurate).

The processor isn't getting too hot during Cinebench at maximum load, only reaching 75°C, which means it's not overheating.
