Need help with Skyrim performance? Let me know what you're experiencing!
Hi all, I'd first like to say this is my first post so apologies if it's in the wrong place or I'm doing something wrong, etc. I'm having trouble with my PC; Specs: CPU: Intel Core i3 6100 3.7GHz Dual Core GPU: Sapphire Radeon R7 360 Nitro 2GB RAM: Corsair Vengeance 8gb DDR4 2133MHz Mobo: AsRock H170m Pro4 m-ATX SSD: Intel 535 Series 120GB PSU: Silverstone 600W Silver Rated Modular PSU CPU Cooler: Stock Case Fans: 4 extra, CoolerMaster Sickleflow X's, on max RPM constantly. Temps hang around 53c on the CPU and 56c on the GPU, under load. Skyrim usually runs fine, i have a few mods installed, mainly Quest/New Lands mods, but the one that matters is the "Skyrim HD 2K Textures Pack", although the title says 2K, some textures are 8K. I get 60-70 fps on average, but I'd like to add a few extra mods without much lag, a flora overhaul for example. Which should i upgrade, CPU or GPU? Note: I play on Ultra High with AA and AF turned down to 4x and 8x respectively. Thanks for any help in advance, Dylan
GPU... at least around 950 or 380, then you have a decent setup (besides the stock cooler, which isn't too much of an issue)
GPU recommendation: opt for a model with at least 4GB of VRAM. Available options include: r9 380 4GB, GTX 960 4GB, r9 290 4GB, r9 390 8GB, and GTX 970 4GB.
I agree with my thoughts. It's frustrating because I'm only 16 and had to budget carefully, wanting both good storage and power. @Pohernori a R9 380 looks like a solid pick to cut costs. Thanks for the advice—it really helped confirm what I suspected. No need to finalize or pick an answer right now; just wanted to share my thoughts.
Try installing it in that folder (Mod Organizer\Mods\Skyrim HD 2K) and exporting at 4k or 2k. It may not improve your results as much, but it's useful. If you see the quality drop too much, restore the backup or get a fresh download. These changes won't help with floral or grass updates—they strain the GPU and CPU more than they benefit texture memory usage.
Use 2k textures for quality. 4k+ works best on high-end cards with ample VRAM.
