Recently, two drives stopped working within 24 hours. One was an SSD in my laptop, and the other was an external HDD. I suspect they might be linked, which I’ll explain later. The first failed drive was the external HDD—it’s mainly a backup drive, but I used it to move files between computers via USB. It’s a 1 TiB Toshiba Canvio Advance from about two years ago. The second was the internal SSD connected through the laptop’s SATA port. It’s a 2 TiB TeamGroup QX model, less than a year old. Both seem to have failed in similar ways—they don’t power on, and I never see them spin up. The HDD’s indicator light doesn’t turn on, and neither does it show up when I try to connect it via USB adapter. In the BIOS, the SSD isn’t listed, and the adapter only works on my laptop or another computer. The only connection point was at the time of failure, which makes me think the laptop might be involved. My machine is an MSI GL65 10SFSK. This isn’t the first drive issue with this laptop; earlier it had problems where the boot NVME drive would vanish unexpectedly, sometimes crashing the OS. I’ve tried tightening its screws, but it didn’t help. I’m wondering if power issues could be the cause—maybe the laptop was overvolting the drives? The power brick gave a normal 20V output, so that doesn’t seem likely. The battery probe size is too big for the connector, making testing difficult. Have others experienced something like this? Am I really the only one facing these problems, or is there a pattern I’m missing?
