Upgrading from another OS to Windows10 works better with a fresh installation. Yes, you should download the ISO from Microsoft, create a bootable USB, and install from there. Enter the serial number during activation to complete the setup.

You can use a Windows 7/8 application to enable Windows 10, simply save your activation code prior to installation.

You don't need to activate the software. Windows will block personalization options and display a watermark on your desktop unless you choose otherwise. Otherwise, the OS remains fully operational. Remember Microsoft can adjust this anytime, but updates will still arrive normally. If you need cheaper keys, G2A offers Windows 7 and 8 keys for around $45.
