Need guidance on transitioning from Windows 8 to Windows 7.
Hey everyone, welcome! I currently have a Toshiba Qosmio X870 laptop with Windows 8 installed by default. I’ve noticed it runs faster than Windows 7, but it’s not as compatible with other programs like Fraps. I’m considering switching to Windows 7 for better compatibility, even though it means giving up some speed. My goal is to figure out if my existing software and drivers will still work on Windows 7 or if I need to reinstall everything. I read some sites suggesting Windows 7 and 8 are quite similar, so maybe it’s worth checking. Thanks for asking!
Less suited... who requires fraps desktop recording, as there are superior alternatives. It's not only about boot time; overall performance is better. There’s no significant advantage to moving to 7. In fact, nearly everything that functions on 7 remains functional on 8, with only minor exceptions.
there was indeed a previous version with identical features and branding, only differing in the model number—specifically using 7. I assumed it might work, but since I haven’t changed OS before, I’m uncertain. Right now I’m using Xplit, but my main goal is to run software like Skype, which struggles with version 8 and often crashes or freezes.
Considering a switch to Windows 7 would be a poor decision, as performance is significantly better on Windows 8. Most programs have updated versions compatible with the newer OS, making the transition straightforward. If you still wish to downgrade, it should be simple—around 99% of drivers will function on Windows 7. Also, you’ve successfully run Fraps on Windows 8 during its Developer Preview without issues.
ok then, thanks for the answer, i too, still prefere 7 over 8 true everything is working faster, and most of my software worked as it should.. well "most"......... the reason why i want to change to 7 is.....i have a built in blu-ray 3D player because this laptop supports 3D and it never really works properly, , so i asked to the toshiba forums and they said their player is working fine, and when i asked, none of them are using 7. i also plays battlefield 4, and it just wont launch, after i read the forum it said i need to update to 8.1, so i did... and yes, i can play the game... but i noticed that the blu ray player won't even play anything now, not even a DVD,CD.. anything.... also metro 2033 doesn't work... and saints row 2 doesn't work either..skype for windows doesn't work either (don't tell me to use the 8 version.. it sucks).... this type of thing just pisses me off....i like 8... i really do, but only for how fast it is... overall i would still prefer 7 over 8.. anyway thanks for your answer so its safe to assume that 99% of the driver that are installed on my 8 now will work when i changed to 7 without the need to update it and whatnot? PS: nonono i got it to work, it just some feature are not usable like the "monitor aero desktop" fucntion
in my experience, using 8 feels like a balance between give and take. You get quicker feedback on compatibility costs, but some programs work while others don’t. Speaking of compatibility, I once attempted to update my NVIDIA drivers and every time I restarted the laptop it would freeze into a black screen. I had to put the laptop in sleep mode first, then turn it back on to see the lock screen.
