I'm exploring alternatives to powerline due to its growing instability. I'm considering running a LAN cable through a staircase for better reliability. The plan is to run the cable from the router (FritzBox 6591 Cable) up the stairs to a small switch, then connect my existing cable under the door. I need guidance on suitable cables for this setup—should I prioritize speed or just functionality? Since exceeding gigabit speeds isn't necessary, what options fit well without adding latency? I also want to know if there are devices that can extend the range without extra delay. For a compact switch, what would be a good model and approximate cost? Any suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated. ^^

Power the switch using PoE for convenience. You won’t need specialized equipment since you’re not using PoE hardware yet. A bulky PoE injector would require a wall outlet and add extra complexity, so consider a simple PoE pass-through switch instead. It’s a straightforward option that costs around $70 or more. A regular 5-port switch is cheaper at about $20, making it a practical choice for most setups.

It becomes clearer every day. The extra expense isn’t significantly greater than the cost of going in the opposite direction. Plus, the system works with both past and future versions, meaning you might eventually receive a free advantage instead of paying again for new cabling. I don’t suggest using POE over such long distances. There are booster units that can integrate it into the cable, but it’s actually more efficient to supply power directly from the wall at that point.

It seems the reported size is just an estimate to conceal the cable. The real powerline distance is actually shorter.

I thought about using a standard switch but chose PoE because the location doesn’t have a nearby power source and hiding cables would require running an extension cord close to the main power line or placing a power cable under the door.
