Hi everyone,
I’m seeking suggestions or advice on improving my existing laptop. It’s an Acer Aspire VX5-591G, which I’ve relied on for eight years. Although it still functions well, as a graphic designer I’m encountering performance problems—particularly when handling large files in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.). There are clear delays and occasional slowdowns.

Here are my current details:
OS: Windows 10 Home 64-bit
Processor: Intel Core i7-7700HQ
RAM: 16 GB
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti (4GB)
Storage: 256 GB SSD + 1 TB HDD

Product link:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N12...UTF8&psc=1

I’m considering upgrading any part—RAM, GPU, SSD, or even the motherboard if necessary. I’m not eager to replace everything right away, but I’d like to ensure my system stays capable for the future.

Could you please advise:
- Should I upgrade this current configuration?
- Is switching to a desktop more suitable for better upgrade options?
- Or should I opt for a newer laptop instead of modifying this one?

Any thoughts, ideas, or recommended paths would be very helpful. Thank you in advance!

The GPU and processor are soldered onto the motherboard of the laptop, making them unavailable. Replacing the motherboard also presents challenges because the I/O ports won't match up. The focus shifts to improving the RAM and SSD. Could you share the models or brands of your SSD, HDD, and RAM?

Laptops are designed for portability, but modern models often run very hot—close to 100°C—that limits their use to short periods on a desk rather than extended use. For better performance, I’d recommend using a desktop instead and keeping the laptop as it is.

How much have you allocated for upgrades, a new desktop, or a new laptop? Where are you located?

Hi Lutfij,
Your detailed reply means a lot to me. I went to a nearby computer store and confirmed the recommendations you gave me.
I chose to fully upgrade my laptop, and here’s how it would look:
• 512GB M.2 NVME SSD for booting up and running the operating system
• 1TB 2.5 SATA Internal SSD
• 32GB 3200mhz RAM (though my maximum is 2400mhz)
I’m happy with this plan because my GTX 1050 Ti and i7-7700HQ still perform well with the apps I use regularly.
What are your thoughts?
How much are you planning to allocate for an upgrade, a new desktop, or a new laptop?
For now, I won’t be purchasing a new laptop since I already have a desktop as a backup. I travel once a month and need to bring my laptop to work.
Where are you located?
I’m from the Philippines.
