Ubiquiti devices might seem unusual at times. Still, the most affordable PoE switch I discovered from TP-Link performs very well in my house.

Unifi WAPs usually rely on passive 24V PoE, but many PoE switches don’t handle that. I connected Ubiquiti switches to the WAPs, though it sometimes caused issues. We recently improved our Wi-Fi infrastructure at two sites using WAPs with passive PoE, but none of them could be powered by our latest Aruba PoE HP switches. It was frustrating when we discovered this limitation with our Wi-Fi vendor.

They ought to have verified the system was functioning properly before proceeding instead of sending out the WAPs without confirmation.

It was a tricky situation involving both switches and Wi-Fi upgrades. We planned to replace the switches but first needed to upgrade the Wi-Fi at two sites before submitting the switch RFP. In the Wi-Fi RFP, we specified PoE 802.af compliance, but it wasn’t met. After a year passed since the WAPs were installed, we realized it wasn’t worth the effort. The vendors then provided us with temporary passive PoE switches, which we thought would be sufficient since we intended to install our own later. Unfortunately, this decision led us to avoid working with that vendor again due to the oversight.
