Hey there, I've been trying to figure this out too. I pulled a hard drive from an old Vista laptop and tried connecting it to my PC. After loading some files, I wanted to boot from the drive but it didn't work—showed up with looping Windows repair and a blue screen. Then I removed the drive and attempted to restart into Windows 10, but got an automatic repair prompt instead. It won't let me reset the system while keeping the files, just stating there was an issue without making any changes. I can't restore anything, can't go back to the previous version, and I don’t have a backup image. Safe mode isn’t helping. Any advice? Or should I consider a full reset? Thanks!

According to the "Advanced Options" part, you can perform a reset that retains your information. In the worst situation, you might have to transfer the drive to a functional computer, retrieve the files, and then reset it without preserving data.

Files can be transferred using a different machine with an active operating system. This drive won’t start on its own; a fresh installation is required.

You may need to apply certain boot recovery techniques by connecting via USB to start the device. https://sourceforge.net/projects/boot-repair-cd/ https://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/ You can try any of these options or even use a Linux Live USB to boot into the system and attempt to restore files and processes if everything fails (unlikely).
