I'm not sure how to set up my network, but I've read a bit. Can I connect a 4-port Ethernet switch to my cable modem, run an Ethernet cable to another room to link to another switch, and then hardwire my TV, Tivo, and Blu-ray player? Also, can I plug my Wi-Fi router into the switch using the modem for my computer, printer, and phone? Thanks for any help.

Connect your Wi-Fi router to the cable modem, then use that device as the switch. Run a cable from the router to your hardwired equipment.

Ensure you connect via Modem -> Router -> remaining devices. Verify if the modem includes a built-in router. Be cautious of Double NAT when linking routers, as some applications may not function properly.

Consensus reached here is to check if the second router includes a WAN port and configure it for DHCP on the WAN settings. Also, ensure the second router's DHCP server is disabled.

It varies by modem setup. You typically require a NAT device at the network edge and a routing solution. A standard switch doesn’t provide either function. Once connected to the ISP’s routing infrastructure, you can arrange additional switches in sequence while being mindful of loop prevention.
