I need your parents to be away in the US. My mom passed away, but she knows her house well. I’m looking for a way to monitor the property remotely from outside the country with minimal cost. I’ve seen videos that show only internet activity and provide IP addresses for remote access without using a NVR. I don’t want to record continuously or store footage, just keep an eye on things. Both my homes have internet, and I have Android and Apple devices. I’m trying to find a simple method—maybe using an Nvidia TV shield or an app on a smartphone—to get an IP address for remote connection. Could you suggest something easy to set up and work with a website or local network?

You could easily obtain a Wyze camera. The app works well and streaming is convenient. It’s also affordable. If you need to stream directly from a Wyze cam, you can find the outdated firmware for RTSP and play it back from a computer or similar device. The main consideration with Wyze cams is placing them on a smart outlet so you can restart them remotely. On Amazon, other IP cameras vary in quality—most are unreliable unless you choose well-known brands. Besides Wyze, there are other options like brand-name models and ring or blink cameras. If you have an old phone, it can function as an IP camera via the provided service at https://alfred.camera. This method lets you transform an old iPhone or Android into an IP cam. It’s the simplest approach with a vintage phone. You might also use apps that supply RTSP stream keys, but this requires port forwarding and isn’t very secure without technical knowledge. A useful tip: if using an old phone as a security camera (especially on older Android models), remove the battery and connect it directly via USB to bypass charging. Old batteries often leak when left plugged in.
