got a 2G fiber connection but the modem only supports 1x5GB and 4x1GB ports. Both of us want to use faster speeds. What’s the best way forward? Would setting up a Mutigig switch help or do we need a full Mutigig router? I’m not very experienced with networking, especially since this was my first time living in a house with gigabit internet. Also, my plan is to configure both my computer and my roommate’s for Mutigig. The house already has a smart mesh Wi-Fi system, so I’m mainly interested in using the 1G port because I think it might not handle higher speeds well. I’m not sure if a Mutigig router is necessary or if a switch would suffice.

When the 5Gig port serves as the WAN connection, you'll require a multi-gig router. If it functions as a LAN port, a multi-gig switch is suitable.

Consider the key advantage is that both you and your roommate can stream Gigabit simultaneously. Even if you configure the network to support 2Gbit, there are no assurances it will work at any one location. Higher-speed connections are usually meant for situations where many household members use them together, not just for achieving maximum speed for one user. It’s always wise to allocate more bandwidth than required so you avoid bufferbloat issues.

For a full NBase-T switch (10/5/2.5/1/100), the most affordable option I found on Amazon is around $300: https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-TL-SX105-...B09CYNHL4S. If you need only 2.5G ports, a 5-port switch costs about $140: https://www.amazon.com/TRENDnet-2-5GBASE...B08XWK4HNT
