Hello everyone, I'm facing some problems linking to my university's VPN. After adjusting certain Windows services, I managed to get my Wi-Fi working fine. But when trying to connect via the settings in the attached file, I receive a warning about disabling the configured protocol. The screenshot shows it says "Edit connection properties and select different protocol..." and changing protocols isn't an option. I suspect one of the services I disabled might not be starting properly or has altered its settings. I've tried restoring system settings multiple times, reinstalling the network adapter driver, and even reapplying the VPN configuration repeatedly, but nothing seems to work. I'm only able to resolve this by going back to the service issues. Could you help identify which services might be involved? If it's indeed a service-related problem, what adjustments should I make? Reinstalling Windows isn't an option because I need to stay connected via LAN to the university server for installing it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Praveen.

Did you turn off the event log feature? In Windows 10 disabling it can lead to connection issues. Open msconfig, go to the Services tab, click "Enable all," then apply and restart.

I turned off the event log service. I also recall turning on all the services I disabled. Perhaps I forgot something. Either way, I’ll give it a shot and check the results. Appreciate the help!

Consider initiating a network restart by navigating to settings, then internet options and attempting the troubleshooting tools

Thank you for your work on this. I've already attempted it several times. I've explored all the settings available in Windows (Metro UI, control panel, network and sharing center), which is why I'm focusing on potential problems with the services themselves. While some appear unrelated to networking, there are definitely issues with what seem harmless at first glance. I'm reviewing the dependencies for each service and verifying that the required components are active.

The university outlines specific VPN needs such as allowing UDP ports 1701, 500, 4500 and ESP traffic for most L2TP via PSK setups. MS-CHAPv2 is typically used as the standard security method.

MS-CHAPV2 is the recommended solution from the university. It seems the UPD and ESP traffic details aren't available there. I connected using other authentication methods, but received generic connection errors like "server needs encryption but you're not encrypted."

I'm still looking for a fix. Now that I'm back in my city, I can use the university's network and perform a Windows 10 update (not a full reinstall). I plan to do this next week and see if it resolves the problem. I've adjusted many settings, but this appears to be the last resort. P.S.: My Windows edition is enterprise, so any OS changes require being connected through the university's network via Ethernet.

Lastly, yes I succeeded. However, it required a Windows reset.
