Starting with any moderators, I'm asking this to help safeguard myself and my friends online while learning more about this issue. A friend streammed on Twitch when a strange viewer suddenly entered chat, asking about his location and ISP. He reported the viewer, and said the channel was shut down quickly. When I asked how someone could obtain an IP address from Twitch like this, he wanted to know how to protect his connection better against DDoS attacks and how easily someone can get an IP from a service such as Twitch.TV. He really appreciates any advice. Thanks ahead!

If you're determined, you can always use a VPN to access content, ideally a service you can purchase and set up yourself, to ensure consistent speed.

It happens because your IP address is assigned automatically by your internet service provider based on your location and network settings.

there are always options, and the solution to this is fairly straightforward: it’s usually script kiddies or social engineering. i’ll clarify: script kiddies—the nuisance of the internet—are typically male teens aged 14-16 who believe they’re skilled because they can use others’ tools. these individuals often pay for DDoS services. social engineering, on the other hand, only needs social skills. a clever person could simply learn a friend’s location from conversation and guess their ISP based on what’s available in that region. skilled social engineers might also pressure the ISP or others to reveal more information.

He might have been in the same server (if your friend was playing a multiplayer game).

I doubt they get streamers IP from Twitch.tv. Twitchs acts like portal, same way like YT. If your friends IP was exposed, it was done by some other way. I mean, if the random user would already know the IP, then they wouldn't need to ask where user lives or what ISP they use. You can find those from IP. If you think more popular streamers who get swatted. Those streamers use other services like Skype or even game they are playing (plus twitter, FB etc.) that have known holes. Or with Twitter and FB, ask to share location while making update. I can be wrong about this. nut I haven't heard that using Twitch would make you vulnerable for DDoS or more personal attacks.

We were all on the Hive Server playing Minecraft together. It's a multiplayer game.

He might have missed a chance to click the link. There are scams that can capture it when someone clicks, and they also mention their internet service provider.

He didn’t engage in anything unusual. It was just him playing normally. When that person mentioned “if your internet failed, would you be upset,” then the delay occurred right after my friend blocked the individual.
