AMD R5 3600
16gb DDR4 Corsair Vengeance
PNY GTX 1650
Gigabyte B550M Aorus Pro-P Mobo
Thermaltake smart 500W (80+ Basic)
Explanation
Playing Valorant, the PC suddenly shut off. I tried plugging it back in and turned it on again—no fan noise. This is my first build, so some of what I’m hearing might be normal.
(Used a wristband all the time while opening the case)
I opened the PC, re-seated the RAM, but nothing worked (the second slot wasn’t seated properly).
Removed the RAM and replaced the power supply since I noticed one of the blue components inside was damaged.
Checked the PSU and found a blown component (though I’m not sure if a surge caused it, as my PC was connected to a surge protector).
Fan speed increased to 100, no post.
Continued using a different PSU for further tests.
Swapped GPU and fan speed didn’t change much.
Changed cables but same issue.
Placed GPU in the 4X slot, fan speed still increased.
No post on either attempt.
Swapped GPU with a spare GTX 660, no response—seems the fans were louder on the other GPU too.
CPU and case fans did spin briefly before stopping.
Currently stuck here; I need to go back to work soon but will try more troubleshooting later.
My idea is that the PSU failed and took the GPU with it. I plan to test the GPU in another PC when I’m home.
Anyone have advice? Thanks a lot!
(I can share more details if needed, but it might take time)
Thoughts:
Surge protectors can only handle a certain level of extra energy. In joules, measured. If your area often faces power issues, the protector might have reached its capacity and stopped working.
PSU(s) - if you're using a modular setup, make sure to use only the cables that came with the replacement PSU? 500 Watts might not be sufficient for high demand during gaming, particularly if the PSU has been used heavily for gaming before.
RAM - certain motherboards require the first RAM module to go into a particular slot. Refer to the motherboard's User Guide or Manual.
