Hey there! For Australia, you should check out the Intel Core i7 6700K 6th gen models. They fit your PC upgrade needs and are widely supported. The box doesn’t list the exact generation, but it’s from 2015, which matches the CPU you mentioned. You can find these on Amazon Australia or other local retailers. Let me know if you need more details!

The only i7-6700k available is the sixth generation. If another generation existed it would be labeled accordingly—i7-8700k for the eighth or i7-9700k for the ninth. This CPU matches the sixth generation specifications.

The 6 in 6700K say it's a 6th gen CPU, so it will work. Provided you have the newest BIOS update, your motherboard will also support 7th gen CPU's, like the 7700K. I am not sure if that is cheaper where you live, but that may be an option. But keep in mind, don't overpay for a (relatively) older CPU, when upgrading to a new platform would be within the realm of possibilities too. If I am seeing this correctly, the 6700K goes for 546 AUD. For that price you can go for a B450 board + Ryzen 3600 and just keep your RAM and sell the CPU+mobo combo.

That's a valid observation too, man. I was wondering why it feels a bit too expensive compared to the latest AMD chips.

I believed even with the latest BIOS update, it wouldn't be worth upgrading over an x570 M.II due to performance limits with newer CPUs like Ryzen 5-7. But maybe I'm mistaken—it could still work?

I think you might be a bit confused about what you meant. Essentially, you were asking if it's possible to upgrade your system to a 6700K or 7700K with a BIOS update for around 550 AUD. You also mentioned that for lower prices, you could get a PCPartPicker list including an AMD Ryzen 5 3600 processor and a MSI B450M motherboard. The total comes to $437, and the prices already cover shipping and taxes. You also noted that if your current CPU is under 2666Mhz, you might want to consider a new memory upgrade. You could still get a 3600Mhz 8GB RAM setup without exceeding the new prices for high-end components. You can find more details here: the PCPartPicker link you shared.

I understand your concern, but I wasn't sure if it would actually limit the CPU performance after a BIOS update.

There are superior and inferior B450 boards, and the one I installed is a solid choice, suitable for CPUs up to Ryzen 7 or possibly Ryzen 9. This eliminates the need for an X570. The X570 is mainly required for PCIE 4.0 A BIOS updates, which aren’t necessary on the board I selected from that PCPartPicker list—it’s an MSI Max model. These boards typically include Ryzen 3000 BIOS out of the box, although most modern ones do as well.
