Interesting. The identical issue led me to purchase a fresh motherboard, thinking I’d messed up my last one with multiple upgrades. The brand new Asus board performed just like the previous MSI board after installation. My 7" HDMI monitor worked perfectly! A huge relief. The curved Dell monitor didn’t accept either Display Port or HDMI inputs, so I had to sign up just to express gratitude and share this with others—monitors failing on new builds is something I want everyone to know. I replaced my CPU with the same model, thinking it would be simple. IT WASN'T. My computer started but the screen was black and I still had the Q code 02. No one else's computers started up, the VGA and boot lights appeared, and then they stopped after about a minute.
Good to see this thread has stayed alive... This solution worked for me too (on a different motherboard, Asus ROG Strix B550-F, recently installed). I made sure the monitor was plugged in before the PC booted and the problem with the VGA error light no longer occurs. It does sound like a weird solution, but I suppose the monitor is connected to the GPU so there's some logic to it.

This problem turned my day upside down: The narrative started nearly a year prior (I suspect everyone lost track of time), when I realized it was time to upgrade my computer. My existing setup was decent (i7 8086K, 1080ti). Yet I aimed to explore AMD options and install a 30 series model. Additionally, I wanted to assemble a custom water loop for the first time. With determination, I browsed Newegg and Amazon daily, refusing to settle for reseller prices. For the graphics chip, I chose a 3080. You're aware it wasn't sold anywhere. But one day, a 3090 FTW3 appeared on Newegg. I opted for it. A few weeks passed before I secured an Asus dark hero motherboard and a 5900X from regular stores. I felt accomplished. It took months to gather all components, but I finally began the assembly. Installing the water block on the 3090 felt daunting but manageable. I was excited for a while until I had to take a two-month break for work. Upon returning, the system wouldn't boot with BIOS code 02. It had done so before, but each power cycle or a full BIOS reset resolved it. This time it persisted. I tried removing the GPU, suspecting it might be the culprit after I had modified it for the water block. I plugged in my old 1080ti for a quick test and it worked. I thought the 3090 was fixed. I had to adjust the tubing since the inlet and outlet locations differed from my previous EK water block. I filled the loop and restarted the PC. CODE 02? What a surprise! It booted fine with the 1080ti, not the graphics card. I revisited my search and found an old monitor in the HDMI port that displayed to BIOS. Was the 3090 functioning correctly? After trimming the tubing, I realized I'd need to rebuild the loop.
Hi Big Pinguin, I own my current PC setup for roughly four years. Essentially, it’s a custom loop with an AMD Ryzen 1800X processor, Asus Crosshair VI Hero, MSI 1080 Ti sea hawk with a pre-installed water block. It runs smoothly on Windows 10 64-bit, remains very stable, and has never experienced blue screens. The unusual situation began when I installed a new Asus XG27AQ monitor for my upcoming build. I connected it to the second Display port to test alongside my PG279Q monitor. It functioned for about ten minutes before strange events occurred. The system appeared operational, but Chrome stopped responding to clicks. Task Manager opened without changes, and performance graphs remained static. I tried exiting via Ctrl+Alt+Del but it stuck in the sign-out animation. Eventually, I had no option but to power off the PC completely. After rebooting, it didn’t POST properly—Q-code 22 appeared on the motherboard and CPU lights flared red. I disconnected the new monitor and cut power entirely to discharge residual energy. Once I powered it back on, a Q-code error 02 appeared, but the system booted and displayed a BIOS message indicating it started in safe mode. I checked the BIOS settings, restarted, and after a few attempts, it worked correctly. Eventually, I connected only the new monitor and unplugged the old one, which resolved the issue. This seems odd, but I suspect the problem lies with the new monitor or its display port cable. It never occurred to me that graphics hardware was the issue; I’m certain it’s something related to the monitor itself.
The monitor (Samsung G9) functions well with the 3080ti after connecting the HDMI to another monitor and then switching back to the main monitor via Display port. It also works without problems with the 1080ti. The issue appears to be related to the 30 series card and the display port. It seems nothing displays until you reach the Windows boot screen. There’s no BIOS access available. It might be that EVGA wasn’t aware of this behavior, as several users experiencing the same problem. I plan to reinstall the original cooler on the 3090 and test it in my old computer.
