I’m facing challenges in obtaining a consistent version of Windows Vista Home Premium. I assembled a new gaming rig using parts from my previous setup. My goal was to play Fallout 3, and the wiki offers extensive instructions for running it on Windows 10, which was designed for XP and Vista. It made sense to rely on my older hardware to test compatibility.

The system specs are: CPU – Intel Core 17 2600, GPU – EVGA Nvidia Gtx 560 (likely insufficient for high-res mods), RAM – 16GB (4×4GB) Corsair Vengeance DDR3 at 1600MHz, motherboard – Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD3-iSSD Rev 1.0. My mom secured a Windows XP installation disk for $10, allowing indefinite use of its activation key. She’s unsure why it works on her system but suspects licensing or compatibility issues, possibly claiming it’s meant only for Dell machines.

Despite these details, I’m encountering several hurdles: limited XP 32-bit copies, scarce 64-bit Professional versions, and Fallout 3 being on SP3. While the game runs smoothly on my machine, I want to enable higher resolution mods to fully utilize my resources. Windows Vista Home Premium supports full RAM and 64-bit CPU, but Microsoft no longer markets it, and most physical copies on eBay are 32-bit. I’m open to downloading an ISO but feel uneasy about piracy and security risks.

Could anyone assist in locating a functional Vista Home Premium copy—or suggest alternatives? Your feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

It seems it should work on 7 instead of Vista. I prefer that version over Vista. There should be more keyboard shortcuts available compared to Vista, and I’m not sure about an official download method online—with 7 you can just enter your product key. Have you checked the wiki for running Fallout 3 on Windows 10 yourself? I installed it before and everything worked fine without any adjustments.

You're looking for information about obtaining Vista or a related topic. Your purchase of Vista Pro from eBay a couple of years ago is noted, along with your experience running the game from 2008 and the availability of updates. The main challenge was locating compatible GPU drivers.

I don't believe I've used it in 7 years, though the Steam site mentions it wasn't designed for it and could fail. The recommended specs suggest XP or Vista. It seems to function okay on Windows 10, but not very smoothly on my main desktop—works decently on my laptop with an i7 and no graphics card, whereas my main desktop with an i9 and 2080 Ti runs much better.

I’m searching for a stable version of Vista or a suitable replacement. It may not function well with Windows 7 according to the Steam site. Nvidia provides the necessary drivers on their platform.

Steam or personal users? Seven is preferable to Vista for better overall system reliability.

To clear a few things up... Windows XP X64 is not the same OS as Windows XP. XP came first, then MS used XP as a base for Server 2003 before then using Server 2003 as a base for XP 64. The reason XP64 only goes up to SP2 is because that was the last SP released for Server 2K3. Avoid XP64 at all costs. Sounds like your mom got hold of a rare XP VLK or Volume License Key. They were intended for large corporations who have possibly hundreds of computers, essentially you would say to MS "I want a key for my 100 machines", they say "Sure, that'll be £10,000 please", you pay them and they give you a key never never expires but will only work on a VLK copy of the OS and require no activation. The idea is so IT support only need to keep track of 1 key, not 100. If you want a Vista disc now the best way is to torrent it. I have a genuine Vista Ultimate disc and it no longer reads in a drive and from what I hear that's a pretty common issue. Download a Retail ISO with SP3, burn it to a DVD and profit. As long as you've got an AV running with real time protection theres very little chance of it infecting your main computer and as long as get one with lots of good feedback and a high number of seeds you can be pretty confident its clean. FTR yes, FO3 does also run fine on Windows 7 but it does need some tweaking.
