Alright, so i've got a current PC: OS: Windows 8.1 [I upgraded to windows 10 looooong ago, as soon as it allowed me to, i hate windows 8 with a fiery passion] MoBo: GA-78lmt-usb3 CPU: FX 4100 [Dinosaur] GPU: Sapphire Nitro RX-480 4gb [Upgraded from an HD 6670] Ram: Crucial Generic Ram, 8 gigabyte chip, DDr3, probably 1400-1600 MHz (or lower) HardDrive: 1 Terabyte Hard Drive 7200rpm PSU: 500w EVGA 80 plus bronze And i've ordered some parts: New Motherboard, CPU, Ram, Case, a 120gb NVMe SSD [For a boot drive] I'd like to keep the old hard drive, but use the SSD as a boot drive, i've never upgraded a PC before, and the most i've ever done is install a new graphics card, i have the knowledge of how to build it, heres my question: How do i move my OS to the upgraded PC, i've read around, like i need to uninstall my windows key, then activate it on the new PC or something like that, i dont know, i've also heard that windows 10, the key is bound to your Microsoft Account, idk, I need to know how to do everything, where to download the OS, how to install it to the new pc, everything, im a noob with this stuff xD.
Technically, with an OEM license you shouldn't transfer it according to Microsoft's terms. With a retail license, as long as it isn't used on multiple devices simultaneously, you're compliant. It seems Microsoft may have permitted linking retail keys to a Microsoft account, though I haven't utilized that option. If not, the safest approach is to install the operating system directly on the machine. Starting with a clean slate is advisable. For data retention, transfer it to another storage device beforehand.
