I have Corsair LPX 16GB (2x8) of DDR4 @ 2133. For everyday use I typically use 5-8GB, but when playing GTA V or pushing heavier workloads I sometimes experience throttling. I’m searching for the optimal upgrade, wondering if I can reuse my existing memory. I’m also on a budget. My i7 7700k is overclocked to 5.2 and reaches gaming speeds around 4.8GHZ or so. It’s been a while since I’ve modified it much. I own an RX480 8GB with some aggressive overclocks that hit the ASUS software limits. There’s also a Z270H MOBO-max kit of 64GB @ 3866. I could buy the same model for CAD 120, but it’s slow. Would it help to purchase a 2x8 of 3866 (CAD 165) instead? Or should I opt for some ripjaws V 2x16 @ 3200 (CAD 170)? I understand this might be discouraged, but could I fit my older RAM in the new slots with the faster sticks? If not, what’s a reasonable price for my current memory? Thanks!
I’m a busy person with lots on my plate; I juggle school tasks, notes, and resources, then switch to games like GTAV or Cities: Skylines. I rarely get throttled except for big game memory issues. I can boost my RX480 to steady 60-80 FPS at medium settings (1440), but it’s not easy to manage everything. I also render 3D content, so an upgrade would help either way. I found the video timing useful but still unsure about mixing. It seems like a lot of effort, so I’m deciding now. Should I buy a cheaper slow kit for more space, go with 2x8 GB if my current setup works, or pick a middle-ground speed of 2x16? Every penny saved matters, but I want the right choice. What do you think about these options?
The slowest unit should be positioned at positions 1 and 3, whereas kits 2 and 4 should form the updated group, keeping the new version fairly similar. ^_^
