It seems you're expressing frustration. Want to try running Ethernet to resolve the issue?

Generally, Wi-Fi works fine—just make sure your router is good enough—but using Ethernet is always preferable when available.

My router is completely useless—it's the one Verizon provided. It's located in a secure closet in my basement, which is the only spot in the house with Ethernet.

That gives a clear picture. I’d probably attempt to connect via Ethernet or upgrade to a stronger router. If you do, make sure your desktop has a solid Wi-Fi card. Regarding your internet speed, the 30 down and 8 up numbers might reflect Verizon’s claims or Speedtest results from your own device, depending on the connection method—WiFi or Ethernet.

Choosing a solid router really makes a difference. For a Wi-Fi adapter, you don’t need anything fancy. I’m using a $20 TP-Link with two antennas and it’s performing great.
