Need assistance with assembling a new computer.
Hello,
I’m planning to assemble a new PC with the components you listed: AMD 9950X3D, RTX 5080, and I’ll use a standard motherboard without overclocking. I prefer not to spend extra on high-end ROG boards but also don’t want something too cheap or unstable.
I’ve been using 980 Pro SSDs so far and plan to upgrade to PCIe5 drives, aiming for at least two sticks. Here are my questions:
1. Would you suggest a motherboard that supports the full performance of those new SSDs? I’m considering the TUF Gaming X870-Plus, but I’m unsure about the SSD slots.
2. Should I opt for 128GB of RAM with two sticks or four sticks? There’s a difference in performance.
3. For power supply, I’m thinking the ROG Thor Titanium 3 1600W. Is that sufficient for my heavy 3D rendering tasks?
4. Which PCIe5 SSDs do you recommend? I’d like one for daily use and another for backup, wanting a clear performance boost over the 980 Pro (which was PCIe4).
5. Since the CPU doesn’t have a cooler, are there better cooling options now? People often complain about leaks and maintenance—should I still consider fan-based cooling?
Thanks for your help, and I appreciate your advice.
I would examine the RX 9070 XT and RTX 5070 ti closely. They deliver most of the performance of a 5080 model at a significantly lower cost.
1. What budget are you planning for the graphics card?
2. A set with two 64GB modules is probably easier to manage than four 32GB units; do you have something that actively uses memory, or is it just a passive component?
3. An 1600W power supply is more than sufficient, and a solid 850W unit would be adequate.
4. The performance gap won’t be as noticeable unless cooling is poor and you’re frequently moving large files over older PCIe 4-based storage.
5. Preference matters—generally, fans tend to cause fewer long-term issues, though water coolers are usually very dependable for the first few years. Thermalright offers good options under $100.

I developed it after noticing many recent queries about upgrades both here and on CPU forums, and I believe... forums.
1. Im willing to pay as long as its a meaningful investment. Id say I like the board to be from Asus
2. I do 3D content production. Ive been using 64gb so far and sometimes I almost hit the ceiling. So I think for a new build 128gb would keep me on the safe side for the future.
3. I have a Rog Thor 850w atm. I wasn't sure if that will be enough.
5. Reliable for 3-5 years? I have a dual 2500rpm fan cooler and it never gave me any troubles for almost 6 years now. And i never cleaned inside the poor case. Do water coolers need any maintenance?
Thanks in advance.
Keep your existing SSD. Search for a collection of 2x48GB or 2x64GB CUDIMM RAM.

Interesting points to consider. Intel's 24 cores seem superior compared to AMD's 16, but why is the 9950X3D so popular? The design looks quite unappealing.
9950X3D nearly completely dominating 285K across all areas 😐
The AMD CPU excels in gaming. In contrast, other CPUs perform comparably but with less efficiency.
