I have an Asus X509FJ with Windows 10 Home preinstalled. I need to perform a clean installation of Windows 10 because I'm experiencing frequent BSODs and the system feels slow even though it has an SSD. It's been over a year since the warranty expired, so reinstalling now would be a good idea. I'm wondering if I can activate Windows using the same key that came with the laptop, or will that key no longer work? If I can't use it again, I might take it to a shop. Alternatively, I could try reinstalling myself and save about $20 for the installation fee. I should note down the current activation key before doing the reinstall. Both my parents are out tomorrow, so I hope I can complete this without any interruptions.

With an MS account, the device may turn on during sign-in.

I agree, but it's connected to my desktop that has a pirated version... so I can't depend on it.

Consider selecting the Restore Windows feature... enter the Windows search bar "Reset this PC" to potentially resolve the issue you mentioned.

I actually attempted to reset Windows, but it didn’t make a difference. A friend suggested reinstalling it on an OEM version, which might automatically restore it—want to check that.

With a valid license, you can locate it on the laptop easily by searching online for "how to find windows 10 product key." Keep in mind that Windows tends to avoid recognizing hardware modifications, so an older key may not function on a completely different system.

Typically, reinstalling Windows will turn it on automatically when you first log in, particularly with a linked MS account. This shouldn’t cause any worries. Concern about the “pirated” version is unnecessary; piracy isn’t a concern here. You can safely download the ISO from trusted sources and install it without an activation key. An unactivated system will operate just like an activated one, except you’ll notice a “Windows is not activated” water mark in the lower corner. Overall, it works perfectly normally. I’d emphasize that there’s no need to use hacks or untrustworthy methods to get Windows running.

Using the same account doesn’t imply key sharing. One MS account can connect to many Windows keys. I’m likely tied to several Windows versions under my account. Probably yes. But if not... You’ll need to find a way to discuss this truthfully with your parents. It’s better to be open, especially if they’re not the worst kind. While it might feel simpler to hide, it will eventually take its toll.
