Need assistance swapping out RAM and M.2 SSDs?
Hi there, I'm looking for guidance on selecting the optimal RAM and M2 configuration for my laptop. I need at least 64GB of RAM and 4TB of storage. My machine is an MSI Pulse 17 B13VFK with an i7-13700H processor, NVIDIA RTX 4060 graphics, and a Samsung M425R1GB4BB0-CWMOD RAM module (5200MHz CAS latency 40). For the M2, I'm considering the Patriot Memory VIPER VP4300 Lite 4TB, but I'm unsure if it fits well. I also have Corsair Vengance CMK64GX5M2B6600C32 modules (32GB at 6600MHz CAS latency 32x4) installed in the desktop, and I want to ensure compatibility. I'm not sure about the ideal settings or performance benchmarks. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
The top choice for laptop RAM is to match the current specifications with higher capacity modules. I followed a similar approach with my dad's computer that had limited RAM and was running low on memory. I looked up the part number, searched Amazon, and found a compatible option that fits the same speed and latency requirements. If you're planning a dual-RAM setup, aim for matching speeds and CAS latency. For a single upgrade, opt for 5200MHz CL40 SO-DIMM sticks from Samsung to keep things close in performance. You’d need two units, but they’re the largest available in standard laptops. An alternative at a comparable price is the Corsair Vengeance 4800MHz CL40, though you should confirm your laptop supports M.2 drives of that size. Just test it in place—most modern systems will handle it without issues.
I see your concern, it's frustrating not finding exact specs for this laptop. The idea is to balance capacity with better performance—higher frequencies and lower latency. It would be ideal to keep the same frequency while improving speed, even if just a bit. I’m really disappointed that technical details aren’t clearly listed for maximum frequency and minimum latency. Usually those are mentioned in all desktop motherboard specs. I hope someone can provide this information so I can pick the best RAM and make an informed decision. I have plenty of money, so I won’t settle!
For the M2 I’ll follow your advice. I’ll purchase it via Amazon Prime, install it, and if everything works out, I’ll keep it. If it doesn’t function properly, I’ll swap it for another model, preferably with less capacity (around 2TB). Thanks for the support! Hope someone else can assist me further—maybe finding that useful info will help. XD
Just a quick note, I purchased the M2 (Samsung 990 Pro 4TB) and the Ram right now. Once they arrive, I’ll set everything up and keep you posted. I really hope everything works smoothly and there are no issues. Thank you for your time and support! I’ll let you know as soon as I’m updated.
The thing is, on laptops, getting RAM with 'tighter timings' may not even work, motherboards on most laptops are a lot more locked down & don't always play nice with hardware that has different settings - however, there's always the chance it's just plug & play like I said, hopefully that's the case for you, especially on the M.2 drive cuz those 4TB-ers ain't cheap (I have one myself, got it last holiday season on sale for under $250 before tax, and it's a Samsung 990 Pro as well).
