Need assistance selecting a new laptop?
I'm searching for a laptop, but I'm uncertain about what to choose... I haven't owned anything since a '96 hp desktop that would have problems running diablo 2 battlenet etc etc; remembering now that someone bought it for me and that came to find out had very little in the way of upgrade or future-proofing! Thus we begin - filling out this form - not too familiar with tech.
1. What is your budget?
I aim to spend between $500 and 900 USD. (Main upgrades could add 350 to 500, maybe?) Total could reach about 1350 after upgrades?
2. What size notebook are you thinking of? Screen, 15-17.3 inch; weight, nothing too heavy. Try to stay under 5.6 lbs.
3. What screen resolution do you prefer?
At least 1080p. Possibly 1440p or higher (depending on offer).
4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop? It should be portable and versatile. My main use is at home.
5. How much battery life do you require?
5 to 8 hours. I believe higher performance reduces battery life.
6. Would you like to play games with your laptop? If yes, please list the titles you want and the settings you prefer (Low, Medium or High). I'm unsure about playing a lot but if so, I'd like perspective games that run optimally. Also, I want AAA titles with better performance than medium settings, ideally smooth FPS.
Perspective Games: #Diablo 2, Resurrected. #Grim Dawn series. #Guild Wars 1 + expansion. Maybe #Path of Exile
Optimal settings for these games.
7. What other tasks do you plan to perform on your laptop? (Photo/Video editing, etc.)
+ Streaming videos (I'd definitely use it with HD non-smart TVs or monitors). + Able to keep a few browsers open and play music in the background while gaming. Multi-tasking, etc. Not sure if I'll edit videos, record music, or create content.
8. How much storage do you need? (Hard Drive capacity)
I'd say around 2TB (I plan to upgrade myself).
9. If you're considering specific sites to buy from, please share their links.
Bestbuy.com, ebay.com, Outlet.dell.com, Sagernotebook.com, https://rjtech.com/shop/index.php?dispat...ory_id=247
Anywhere you trust or recommend. I've heard upgradable and future-proof options are important.
10. How long do you intend to keep your laptop?
I don't plan to upgrade it for several years.
11. What type of optical drive would you need? DVD ROM/Writer, Bluray ROM/Writer, etc.
Most seem to be out of stock now; what suggestions do you have for alternatives?
12. Please share your preferences regarding brands and any dislikes, with reasons.
Avoid overheating issues. I've heard some Dell models and certain other brands can overheat. (See later question about vapor chamber.)
Not sure here. Help is needed.
I'm leaning toward a unit with vapor chamber cooling. A Thunderbolt port would be nice. I need higher functionality/connectivity.
13. Which country do you reside in?
United States.
14. Any additional details you'd like to provide?
Because I found this suggestion earlier:
"General System Requirements for AAA Title games in 2020
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3550H or Intel Core i5 7300HQ.
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 Ti.
RAM: 8GB.
Storage: 512GB (SSD or HDD)
OS: Windows 10."
Path of Exile Recommended System Requirements
CPU: x64-compatible, quad-core, 3.2 GHz or better
RAM: 8 GB
HDD: 32 GB available space
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti or ATI Radeon RX560 or better
OS: Windows 10
DirectX: Version 11
Screen Resolution: 1080p
Network: Broadband Internet connection"
Upgrades:
Screen - upgradable ~$150
RAM - upgradable ~$100
NVME - upgradable ~$125
WIFI - upgradable -$25 (Intel AX210?)
Also via my laptop, what accessories would you recommend for the Amazon Firestick unlocked? A few years ago I bought an OTG device and a couple flash drives to expand content. It never worked properly.
Appreciate any advice. I'm ten years behind on tech, possibly even further.
Edit: p.s. I'd prefer base specs if possible so I can upgrade myself. What do you think?
If the offer is good for new, like-new, excellent+ or refurbished, a modified unit is acceptable. Once it's worth it, I'll replace generic or underperforming parts.
Is a vapor chamber excessive? Are there models that suit cooling needs?
I've heard some processors can be swapped with higher-end ones of the same generation. I assume the chipset must match?
Slightly under budget options are available at Walmart and Dell.
I've been comparing laptops using nanoreview.net. The katana scored a high 80's in performance when I installed it there.
