I recently switched from an i7 10700K to a 5800X3D and am experiencing frequent stuttering when using my RX 7900 XT. After some investigation, I suspect Freesync is the cause. Playing YouTube videos on my second monitor or recording gameplay locally reduces the stutter significantly. I’ll share links to videos I recorded showing the stutter with Freesync and the smoother performance without it.

Freesync depends on four parts to function properly. Initially, it might stem from a monitor or cable issue, but if you notice problems when recording on your video card—perhaps due to outdated firmware or incompatible drivers—it could be a driver-related concern. Additionally, certain games are optimized for Freesync while others perform poorly with your graphics card and display. I’ve experienced success with some titles but struggled with stuttering on my 5800x and 6600 XT when using my monitor.

Check if you're using the newest monitor drivers or standard Windows ones. Are you capping your frames per second to fit within freeSync specifications? Do you have a GPU BIOS update available?

I’m planning to test the firmware. I thought the monitor/freesync wasn’t the main issue since I hadn’t seen such intense stuttering earlier. Appreciate the advice!

I've adjusted the monitor firmware and kept working through the issues. It seems reducing the secondary display to 30Hz resolves the stuttering when FreeSync is active. I'm still trying to understand what's happening.

For those who see this as the future, I think the issue lies with MSI Afterburner. Adjusting the hardware polling interval below its default can cause more stutter, no matter how fast your computer is. Setting it to 2000ms brings the stutter down to just a few seconds, and the frame time chart appears normal.
