I’m thinking about getting a Windows laptop for my child as she starts high school. Based on what I need, I might buy two in her school career. Right now I’m considering two 14-inch models that fit within my budget or seem reasonable for a school device. I think she probably won’t require more than one, and the school expects even less.

I’ve summarized the main points in a table below. Both laptops offer FHD display, 256GB SSD storage, and 8GB RAM (either two 4GB or one 8GB). Here are some details to compare:

Drawn to the Vivobook Go because of its quad-core Ryzen processor, DDR5 memory (though soldered), better build quality, and lighter weight, though there might be other factors to consider.

The x415 model includes Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5 instead of 4.1, and two memory slots versus one, which could support dual-channel usage, with the possibility of upgrading to 16GB.

Maybe I’m missing something important?

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Ultimately, I just need to decide which one is best.

Check the dimensions and category of the storage unit?
If they match, decide by flipping a coin between the two laptops.
No obvious advantage for either option.

The build quality assessment comes from several factors. I would choose the unit with ram expansion options. An 8gb memory might not be sufficient, and dual channel ram improves processor speed. There’s no noticeable difference between DDR4 and DDR5 RAM. Check the display specifications. For dim lighting, such as outdoors, you need a brighter screen. A brightness of 300 nits is average, while 500 nits provides excellent visibility.
