Hi, I just got a used Alienware M15 R4 gaming laptop. The CPU temperature stays between 90-100 degrees even when idle. How can I cool it down? Should I replace the CPU or undervolt it? I only use it for browsing and streaming games via Steam, not for gaming or heavy tasks. Please let me know.

I recently acquired a used Alienware M15 R4 gaming laptop. If it includes an HX series processor, you might consider undervolting both the CPU and GPU. Without an HX SKU processor, you’d only need to lower the GPU voltage. You could also upgrade the thermal paste to a higher quality version and replace the thermal pads with better ones. This advice builds on what my colleague mentioned earlier. Often, used laptops come with leftover components from previous owners that aren’t included in the purchase. If you haven’t reinstalled the operating system, that would be another good step.

I have an i9-10980HK in my system. Streaming games through Steam from a host machine is causing high temperatures around 95 degrees despite only 5 percent CPU usage. I have no experience with undervolting CPUs, so I'm unsure how to proceed.

Follow the instructions to remove the dust bunnies first. Watch a video showing how to take apart your laptop model.

Turn off the CPU turbo boost via the control panel. Search for a tutorial on YouTube. This reduces temperature by around 10-20°C.
