I've been using a partially broken second-hand laptop with solid specs for several years and am searching for a new one that shouldn't cost too much (preferably under £600).
I own a series X model, so I don’t rely heavily on PC gaming—mostly I play online games like Halo: MCC and some titles not yet available on consoles. I don’t often run demanding games on my PC.
I create music with Ableton and stream movies and TV shows.
An SSD would be a nice upgrade—I already have one in my work laptop, and it makes a big difference.
Regarding screen quality, I’m not overly concerned, but I’d like a bright, sharp display for browsing and working, plus a good keyboard for writing. For gaming, as long as the processor and GPU can handle 4K or 1440p on an external screen, I’m fine.
Is my budget realistic for what I need? Any suggestions?
And is now a suitable time to purchase? Is the chip shortage affecting laptop prices?
Thanks for your assistance!

Welcome to the forums, newcomer! I create music with Ableton. When you mention using Ableton, it reminded me of Apple's MacBook. 4k or 1440p on an external screen is great—I can't get that on a £600 laptop. You should aim for a £1200 to £1500 budget instead. Some games aren't available on consoles yet, so it's better to list the titles you're interested in. The developers tailor each game's resource needs differently. Is the chip shortage raising laptop prices? Yes, prices are higher due to limited stock and the pandemic. Which site do you prefer for buying?
