Checking out an old PC for media streaming sounds interesting. You're looking for something that works across Windows, Apple, and Android devices, including PS3 support. Avoiding heavy OS changes like FreeNAS is a good idea. Let me know if you need suggestions!

The simplest option is to set up FreeNas. Another method involves using any Linux-based system with Wembin add-ons, offering greater flexibility. Every NAS configuration takes some effort, but it's definitely worthwhile.

The simplest (though challenging on the PS3) method is to run things on a local webserver. Then you can access the page directly and stream it if it supports streaming. Alternatively, you could configure the webserver to point to the same folder as your PS3 media server.

Can Freenas serve as a DLNA server for a PS3? I’m just looking to share movies and photos at home and stream them to the console.

Yes, you can set up a DLNA server on your own device. I’d recommend using Plex, which includes a DLNA feature and works well. Freenas is suitable—just install it on a flash drive. Alternatively, you could run Ubuntu as a Plex server with network shares, as long as you have access via monitor or remote desktop for updates.
