I’m aiming to set up my own NAS and already have a clear idea about the hardware I need. Now I’m focusing on finding an operating system. I’ve been checking FreeNAS, but it doesn’t seem ideal for me. I need something that supports expanding existing RAID configurations when more storage is required. It should be straightforward to install and preferably affordable or open-source. Anyone have recommendations for a good option? I’d prefer Linux, BSD, or similar, as long as setup is simple.

I enjoy Ubuntu Server. It's relatively simple to configure and requires less RAM compared to FreeNAS.

I've been considering this, but it seems to function well as a NAS.

Yes, I manage my mine and although it may take a long time to configure, it functions effectively.

You might set up FreeNAS using UFS. Dropping zfs would eliminate the memory need and let you choose a simpler RAID setup.

It seems the concept of a simpler RAID setup is confusing. You're considering RAID 5, but it appears FreeNAS doesn't support expanding RAID arrays regardless of version. That might not be entirely accurate.

It can handle a lot, but you'll need to invest some time to get familiar with it. There are helpful resources available online.

I might be mistaken, but from what I grasp it's the RAID zfs implementation (RAIDZ1 or RAIDZ2) that limits expansion of the RAID setup. Growing RAID1 4, 5, and 6 is possible with one command, which makes sense for FreeNAS to handle.

Great, I'll experiment with it as soon as I've got a computer set up.

Absolutely, that's exactly what I was considering, though I'm not entirely sure.
