My Vodafone speed is suddenly dropping to 910 Mbps.
Hi everyone, so I've been using Vodafone's Gigafast 900 FTTP since November and everything worked great until recently when the speed dropped a lot. I connect to my desktop directly with an ethernet cable through a Deco S4 mesh system. Back then, the speeds were steady like this: https://www.speedtest.net/result/14060984223.png Now, they change by around 80Mbps and it feels like the connection is slowing down sometimes. I also checked other speed test sites where downloads started at 400Mbps but slowly dropped to about 100Mbps or less. Maybe this is just a bug in my browser or something unrelated? Honestly, I'd really want to know if it's something wrong with my setup or if it's just some factors out of my control. That's why I'm asking here because I am stuck on how to figure out what's going on. Another thing to note is that my minimum guaranteed speed is 455Mbps so maybe Vodafone is being a bit unfair too.
Basically, your connection is fine even if people else share the same wire. Lots of Gpon setups can connect to 64 different neighbors at once. The best way to see this is to try testing when traffic isn't happening a lot, like right after sunrise. I'd suggest plugging your PC straight into Vodafone's box first. That way you only use the line and not other devices. If you complain about it, they can't blame the router because now only the computer is using the pipe. It might be that specific PC setting something weird that makes the signal drop to zero after a restart, but I never figured out why. Keep trying...
Basically, the connection is "on" and working. You share one thin strand of fiber with several neighbors. Many Gpon systems can have up to 64 other people sharing this line. The best way to see if it's busy is to try testing at different times. Very early in the morning usually means less traffic.
First, plug your PC directly into the box that Vodafone provides. That should only connect your computer and the ISP, leaving no room for a router to be the problem. Sometimes you reboot your PC and the internet goes back to normal. I've never been able to figure out why this happens sometimes. If it's the same problem on another computer, then it was probably that one PC with a specific setting or bug.
If you log into the Vodafone box, does it show speed? It seems like many ISPs use routers with extra features for testing. That would make it easy to know if your PC is causing the slow internet, not the connection itself.
Thanks for getting my response from @bill001g! You got me on the right track after I was told before with the "you're hitting minimum speed" message. I tried reaching out to Vodafone again by connecting back to the original router, which is what you suggested. They even changed a setting at their end. Now everything is running at max speeds thanks for all that help!
