Hey there! I’m not sure how many people run or understand how Windows Insider builds function, but I thought it’d be worth sharing. Last year before Windows 11 was fully released, I downloaded the insider preview on my laptop (an Asus G14 from 2021) just to experience what the new version would feel like. Of course, with incomplete builds you encounter issues, but I read that upgrading once the full release came out was possible. After months of bugs and crashes, the official version finally launched, though I missed it. Without a way to upgrade, I stuck with the insider builds until now.

Yesterday my laptop completely crashed—everything kept resetting, the desktop would restart every few seconds, the taskbar wouldn’t load, and apps that opened with Windows shortcuts would close instantly after the reset. I think this was caused by conflicting update files, similar to what I’d felt before, but I couldn’t open File Explorer to investigate.

At Best Buy Geek Squad I was told to back up important files and then pay $200 for a fresh install—feels like an overkill. If anyone knows how to get out of this without wiping the device, it would be really helpful. Thanks!

Microsoft’s guidance for those affected by Insider build issues is straightforward—either try fixes or use advanced tools like SFC or DISM to clean Windows images, check logs for errors, or install updates randomly until you find a solution. After more than 15 years in tech, I’ve learned that backing up data and then applying these steps often works faster than wrestling with Windows problems.
