I was checking my BIOS settings while planning a test comparing default RAM speed versus XMP. When I saved, the system indicated Precision Boost Overdrive was enabled from its default setting. I didn’t click any options except XMP, but after looking into PBO, I decided to try it. After saving, I ran Cinebench R23 with both PBO and XMP activated while tracking my hardware stats via hwinfo. My 5600X processor maintained boosted speeds of around 4.6GHz to 4.625GHz throughout the test, resulting in about a 5% improvement over when PBO was off. This performance is nearly as close to the single-core speed of the 5600X (4.65GHz). Interestingly, enabling XMP didn’t affect the results at all. It seems Cinebench isn’t dependent on memory speeds. Do you use PBO and have any thoughts on its long-term use?
I tested PBO and used auto OC at +200, but didn’t see any changes. I didn’t check closely, but since I’m already GPU-limited, it’s likely the impact was minimal.
GamersNexus conducted several evaluations using PBO and believes it offers little benefit. The document is dated mid-2019, suggesting some improvements may have occurred. I'm uncertain about its effectiveness since I haven't personally tested it in games, though similar results were noted in the prior report with no noticeable improvement.
PBO is fine with the curve optimizer. It performs well even in the stock clock range when PBO is disabled. Looks quite smooth. Running this way means you probably won't need PBO unless you're aiming for the very peak.
I handle it myself. I managed to keep the 5800x within -20 without significantly affecting performance. A few situations saw minor improvements. This model offers a solid breakdown, mainly focused on managing "tame heat."
I'll take a look at this. When my Lenovo Legion ran a 9750h, I performed some undervolting with Intel Xtreme Utility. It resulted in significantly reduced temperatures while maintaining performance. I'm hoping the same applies to Ryzen desktop CPUs.
It’s straightforward. Make sure BIOS is activated and not set to default. Another solid option is PBO, similar to Intel’s boost technology. It delivers maximum performance and efficiency. The main distinction lies with AMD—temperature becomes a constraint. Unlike Intel’s 55-second ceiling, PBO pushes your cooling system harder. It’s adjustable, and reducing voltage generates less heat, which can actually improve core speeds if power is sufficient.
